Frequently Asked Questions

What should my child bring to class?

All Kids Partake cooking classes include all of the ingredients, packaging, and tools necessary. Each day at camp, please ensure your child is prepared using this checklist:

  • Long hair must be tied back.

  • Bangs that get in the eyes should be held back with a hat or headband of some sort.

  • Wear sneakers/comfortable shoes (close-toed).

  • Short-sleeves are best, since long-sleeves can drag.

  • Have your child wear clothes that you feel are okay to get messy!

Your child may bring a labeled water bottle. We have a water cooler available in class.

What appliances and tools will be used?

Some recipes will require the use of a microwave or air-fryer. The teacher and assistant are the only ones permitted to use these two appliances.

Under adult supervision, the children will be using spatulas, spoons, plastic knives, whisks, bowls, jars, and their hands!

What does a camp day look like?

The camp cooking session is 3 hours long (9 AM to 12 PM). Our classes combine hands-on cooking activities with guided instruction on the ideas behind the cooking activity and the science/math concepts involved. We intersperse these activities and instruction with interactive games to reinforce the concepts.

As needed, we also include transition time, calming/centering time, and independent project/arts-and-crafts time to match the needs of this age group (5 to 10 years old).

Campers will measure, prepare, and combine ingredients, work both independently and in groups, observe and experiment, and taste their creations.

Will my child be cooking independently or in groups?

Each recipe is a little different. Some steps require group effort and some steps are done independently. Each child will have their own portion of food to eat at the end of the cooking experiment.

Will children be divided by age?

No. The activities are designed for this age group, 5 to 10 years old, and we will be working together throughout the class.

Who will be watching my child?

The camp day will be run by Megan Gaul (experienced teacher and health coach).

How do you approach food safety?

Kids Partake starts each day with reminders or games all about the core tenets of food safety. We wash our hands frequently, especially before each new cooking activity.

How does my child practice science and math in these classes?

Science and math are integral to cooking! Here are some of the many skills and topics we’ll be using during the camp day:

  • Halving and Doubling (intuitive addition/subtraction and multiplying/dividing)

  • Measurement

  • Conversions

  • Germs/bacteria growth and temperature

  • Molecules, polarity, and emulsifiers

  • Acids and Bases, pH levels, and chemical reactions

  • Science of light, waves, and color

  • Types of mixtures in chemistry

  • Applying the scientific method

  • Circle geometry

  • Nutrition science (proteins, fats, and carbohydrates)

  • Fresh produce and what our plant-based foods need to grow

What ingredients will you be using in the class?

All parents will receive an updated list of ingredients as the class dates approach.

My child has a food allergy/intolerance. How does Kids Partake handle that?

We are not an allergen-free class. However, provided that your child has an allergy of ingestion only, we handle this by making simple substitutions or eliminations to the recipe if possible.

It is the parent or guardian’s responsibility to review the ingredient and food brand list before committing to the Kids Partake cooking classes. A waiver is required for registration for the Kids Partake cooking classes. It is also the parent or guardian’s responsibility to provide a detailed list of all your child’s allergies on the registration form so that any possible substitutions or eliminations can be made. If substitutions and eliminations are not possible, we will notify you.

Will my child be allowed to take their creations home?

We will be making treats to eat during the camp class. If they do not finish eating, they may take it home. We are not responsible for food taken home. Please see the attached required waiver for more details.

What if my child doesn’t like the food prepared?

That’s completely okay! Your child will have an opportunity to try everything they make and will be encouraged to be adventurous, but there is no pressure for them to try everything.
